City of Avon:
Avon is a town located on the western outskirts of Indianapolis in Hendricks County. Latest census updates estimate the population at around 9,000. Incorporated in 1995, the town’s former names include Hampton, White Lick, Smootsdell and New Philadelphia. When the new railway depot was built, a sign was erected with the name Avon, although no one really knows the reason behind the change.
Resident Adrian Parsons, a former Civil War soldier, imported soy beans from Japan in 1981 and became the first farmer of record to engage in sustained and purposeful experimentation of the crop in Indiana. Farm digests record him as the Pioneer of Soybeans.
Avon has been designated by the Indiana Department of Education as a "Four Star" school after placing in the top 25 percentile in the state for graduation rate and statewide testing scores. In November 2008, their high school’s Marching Black and Gold ranked the number one high school marching band in the country, taking first place during the Bands of America Grand Nationals competition held in Lucas Oil Stadium.
Avon is also has its fun side, offering two large parks to enjoy. A little known haven for RC and sailboat regattas, the area also hosts several hobby, art and ethnic festivals throughout the year. Their library has compiled the first of its Oral History project booklets, wherein Avoneers regale their stories and history of the area. The area even attests to a haunted bridge spanning CR 625 E just south of US 36.
