City of Beech Grove:
Located in the southeast portion of Marion County, Beech Grove, Indiana is mainly a residential community, although many large businesses thrive here as well. Its unique blend of commerce ranges from barbershops and restaurants to a wide variety of established and entrepreneurial businesses. Many prefer to travel through the city because it is close to downtown Indianapolis, major thoroughfares of Emerson Avenue, and interstates I-465 and I-65.
Incorporated in 1906, the city recently completed renovation along Emerson Avenue in celebration of its 100th anniversary. A quick tour through downtown Beech Grove may surprise you, with a scenic small town feel coupled with easy access to many of today’s amenities. Within walking distance of one another, Beech Grove offers food establishments, a library, post office, and Wellness Center. Several elementary and secondary schools are supported in the close-knit community, an attribute that attracts many residents to the area. And, although relatively small with attendance estimated at 4600 students - the University of Indianapolis currently ranks fifth in the state for awarding doctoral degrees.
The city boasts a bit of Hoosier pride in its claim to their former resident, Sarah T. Bolton, who she authored “Paddle Your Own Canoe.” Sarah came to Beech Grove approximately 100 years ago. While living on S. Seventeenth Avenue, she wrote many of her poems. South Seventeenth Avenue was known as Beech Bank during that time period. Later, the Bolton Farm was purchased by the city where they built a city park, which is now enjoyed by area residents.
