City of Brownsburg:
Located just 10 minutes northwest of Indianapolis along White Lick Creek in Hendricks County, Brownsburg is considered one of metropolitan Indianapolis’ best-kept secrets.
James B. Brown came to the Brownsburg area and settled in 1824. At the time, he shared this part of the wilderness with trappers, hunters and Delaware Indians. “White Salt or “Wa-pe-ke-way”, were the names formerly given to White Lick Creek. It was along these banks were you would find the Delaware Indians. Originally known as Harrisburg, when the town petitioned for a post office in1836, it was discovered the state already had a city by that name. The community then chose the name of its founding father as its moniker. In 1869, Big Four Railroad opened service to Brownsburg and by 1910, it became a regular stop on the route from Indianapolis to Crawfordsville.
Education has always been a priority here. The first log school was erected in Brown Township in 1828, followed by the planned expansion of one-room brick schools every four miles. After crops were harvested, all family members except mothers were expected to attend. To this day, Brownsburg’s school corporation consistently attains the state’s “Four Star” rating and provides an advanced learning center for students.
The Brownsburg Little League team made it to the World Series Finals in 1999 and 2000 and has finished as either state or district champions for several years in a row.
Several medical facilities have sprung up in recent years, as have shopping and small business opportunities. Brownsburg officials pride themselves on the wide variety of recreation provided through their parks department.
