Cities of Cordy & Sweetwater Lakes:
Located in northern Brown County, the area which now comprises the Cordry - Sweetwater Conservancy District was one of the first in Brown County to be settled. Homesteaders came from southern states and surrounding Johnson County during the early 1800’s. The area was wild enough at the time for bounties to be placed on ‘pests’ such as bear, wolves and panthers. Now the area holds few examples of this wild heritage.
Cordry Lake and Sweetwater Valley were popular fishing, camping and hiking spots for vacations even before the development of the lakes. In 1948, Howard Prince and associates envisioned a reservoir to enlarge Cordry and eventually decided to include nearby Sweetwater Valley. Even though it was heavily promoted as a recreational and resort housing development, it wasn’t until 1959 that the Cordry-Sweetwater Conservancy District was established Prince died in 1962 without knowing if the reservoir would ever be completed. The dams were completed in the late 1960’s and residential development continued for many years afterward.
Locals regard the area’s spring-fed lakes as some of the best fishing around. Located side-by-side, Sweetwater Lake’s 360 acres spans a depth of over 150 feet and includes a private beach while Cordry sports 260 acres. Both lakes permit skiing as well as other types of boating, fishing and swimming. Although famous for its pristine scenery, the Lakes are only 20 minutes from medical and shopping facilities and 50 minutes from downtown Indianapolis.
