City of Danville:
Situated in the heart of Hendricks County, just west of Indianapolis, Danville was founded in 1827 after four men each donated 20 acres to form the original town which was to serve as county seat. The four parcels met at one central point. They drove a stake at this location which marked the location where the current courthouse is now located. It was the home of Central Normal College from 1878 to 1951, providing an
estimated 75,000 graduates to teaching professions worldwide. It is also the hometown of "Big Sam" (Samuel Thompson), who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. He holds the highest record of average RBI’s per game, which is .921 per game. The town square is also home to the Mayberry Café, a restaurant which has become a famous culinary tribute to the folksy 1960’s TV show, The Andy Griffith Show.
Long considered a unique blend of progress and tradition, Danville is one of 11 pilot cities featured in the comprehensive two-year Indiana Downtown Project, a revitalization program sponsored by the National League of Cities. Several area parks and recreational facilities provide swimming, picnic areas, playgrounds and ball courts. It is also the location of one of the state’s premiere skate parks including concrete ramps and half pipes and is free to the public.
Danville Community School Corporation supports two elementary schools and a high school. For two years straight, the Middle School has earned a 4 Star School Rating.
