East Indianapolis:
Indianapolis East, located in eastern third Marion County, includes Lawrence Township, Warren Township and Franklin Township. Each has its strengths from state school ranking to independent area government.
Near east downtown features the craftsmanship of a bygone era in houses along Garfield Park, Woodruff Place and Irvington. Many choose this area to refurbish older homes or enjoy nearby Garfield Park Conservatory or Ellenberger Park’s pool and ice rink. Due east is Warren Township, home of the Warren Performing Arts Center, which recently celebrated their 25 year anniversary. Further north and east you will find the popular Castleton area and the retail giant Castleton Square Mall. The exclusive Geist area also begins in this quadrant. Toward the eastern border of Marion County sits Lawrence Township, home of Fort Benjamin Harrison, a former army base and education center that has been redeveloped into residential neighborhoods, a golf course, and the Fort Harrison State Park.
Franklin Township in southeastern Marion County attracts those who want a little bit of country with their city amenities. Due in part to its controlled business expansion, the area is known for its laid back atmosphere coupled with an award-winning school system. Recent expansion of St Francis Hospital on Emerson Avenue has fostered an explosion of medical facilities, bringing thousands of new jobs to the area. Also nearby are the Indiana Heart Hospital, various medical specialists and support facilities.
