City of Fishers:
The town of Fishers Indiana is located 17 miles north of Indianapolis and is quickly adapting to its status as one of the bustling areas of real estate growth in the city. Ranked in Money Magazine in 2005 as the best place to live in America and three years in a row as the best place in Indiana to live, the area is experiencing incredible growth. The town is not only prosperous, but smart as well – over 60% of residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher. Served by Hamilton Southeastern School district, the area supports 7 elementary, two intermediate, two junior highs, a middle school and two high schools.
Despite its prestige today as an up-and-coming community, the town had a rather unglamorous beginning as the town of Mudsock. The name was later changed, referencing a railroad switch assignment, to Fishers Switch which was named after Salathial Fisher. It was later shortened to Fishers in 1908. Today Fishers revisits this namesake by offering rides on from Fishers Station to the Indiana State Fair every year on their antique railway. The community offers residents bus service to downtown Indianapolis and are putting the final touches to a plan for rapid transit via rail to be completed in the next 2 to 5 years.
Home prices are surprisingly affordable, and the area supports primary, middle and high schools which rank in the upper percentages annually according to the state’s scholastic statistics.
Fishers is also home to the living historical museum Conner Prairie. This hands-on museum is filled with costumed ‘residents’ depicting five historic time periods that reflect the living, social and religious conditions in the 1800’s for Indians and homesteaders alike.
