City of Geist:
The “Geist Area” of Marion County Indiana is not an incorporated municipality, but rather an abbreviated way in which to refer to the myriad housing opportunities available in the area surrounding Geist Reservoir. Spanning the three Indiana counties of Hamilton, Marion, and Hancock, 4 school districts, 4 voting precincts, and 5 zip codes, the Geist area is is comprised of waterfront homes in the range in value from $1-$5+ million. Reggie Miller (the Indiana Pacer legend), Governor Mitch Daniels and former Secretary of State Sue Anne Gilroy have lived along the lake frontage at Geist. There are also numerous other prominent business executives and professional athletes that have called Geist home.
Planning for the Geist Reservoir began in 1913, when the former owner of the IWC (Indianapolis Water Company) Clarence Geist, commissioned engineers to evaluate the city’s future water supply. After being informed that White River and Fall Creek could not provide ample water for the city’s growth rate, Geist envisioned the project to preemptively address the problem. He spearheaded the project during the 1920’s and 1930’s to purchase some 5,000 acres of the former Fall Creek Valley and the small, now submerged, burg of Germantown. A housing surge took place starting in the 1980’s, this was after the defeated proposal in the 1970’s to triple the size. Today, the reservoir still serves as the primary water source for Indianapolis and surrounding
communities. The difference, however, is the exceptional growth and popularity of the area since development in the 1980’s.
