City of Indianapolis:

The Indiana Territory was formed in 1800 and admitted as the 19th state in 1816. By far the largest city in the state, Indianapolis was selected as the site of the new state capital in1820. The city was founded under the assumption that the advantages of its central location on the National Road (now U.S. 40) and the waterpower available along the banks of the White River would prove an invaluable center of commerce. However, the waterway proved too shallow and sandy for transportation. Latest population tallies the area in excess of 800,000. Known as the Capital of Auto Racing, Indianapolis was home to several car manufacturers before Detroit became the industry giant. Today the city hosts the Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400, United States Grand Prix, and the NHRA U.S. Nationals. The city also headquarters the NCAA Basketball Hall of Fame, the Indiana Pacers, the 2007 Super Bowl Champion Indianapolis Colts, and the minor league baseball team Indianapolis Indians.

Sports reign in Indianapolis, but there are many cultural opportunities as well. The city hosts the Heartland Film Festival, emerging as one of the top venues for up-and-coming film artists. Notable museums within the region include nationally renowned Indianapolis Children's Museum, Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indianapolis Museum of Art, and Indiana State Museum. Indy’s architecture has been critically acclaimed for recent additions and the city hosts record numbers of professional and hobby conventions every year. Indianapolis is home to several fine universities and medical research facilities. Riley Hospital for Children is known worldwide for its care of children. Lilly Company has its worldwide headquarters in the heart of the city and is the city's largest private employer.

Downtown shopping was energized in 1995 with the opening of the Circle Centre Mall, a shopping complex with 100 specialty shops, restaurants, nightclubs, cinema, and a performance space. Other attractions frequent nearby Indiana Repertory Theatre, Hilbert Circle Theatre, and Clowes Memorial Hall.

With such a diversity of things to do, it is easy to imagine the housing choices in Indianapolis. Each area has its own magic, from bustling nightspots to classic architecture to great shopping areas. On the north side of the city, Castleton Square Mall has 130 specialty stores and restaurants. Broad Ripple Village is a charming neighborhood north of downtown featuring a fun and eclectic array of shops and eateries. Downtown has a refreshing mix of theatre, jazz, coffee houses, and business and industry; the Westside boasts the Speedway and an international airport; East has a firm base in business and medical facilities; and South section is the gateway to hospitals, Johnson County and Indiana’s hilly countryside.
