City of Martinsville:
Rich in history, Martinsville, Indiana was founded by American Revolutionary War General Joseph Martin. It is the county seat of Morgan County with an estimated population of 12,000. Located in south central Indiana just 25 minutes south of the Indianapolis and Greenwood area, homes and businesses in Martinsville are easily accessed by State Roads 37, 39, 252, 44, and 67. Other nearby towns include Bloomington, Franklin, Mooresville and Nashville.
In 1899 Eugene Shireman created fisheries from converted acres of swamp land. This area was then named Grassyfork Fisheries. Martinsville was known as the “Goldfish Capital of the World.” It still supplies goldfish to areas around the globe. For the believed health benefits, artesian water spas, known as sanitariums, were highly sought and visited. This started in the late 1800’s and continued into the 1960’s.
Martinsville was once the home of basketball great John Wooden. Wooden was UCLA’s basketball coach, and guided them to victory as NCAA Champions for ten out of twelve years from 1963 to 1975. Another famed resident, Bobby Helms, who popularized the Christmas song, “Jingle Bell Rock” and other top recordings during the 1950’s and 60’s, spent his later years in the town.
Real estate in Martinsville Indiana and the surrounding area is an interesting mix of country and refined tastes. You may take your choice of rustic settings, refined manors or the more customary single family dwelling. Several primary and secondary schools dot the landscape, making Martinsville a stop for many families on the move.
