City of Plainfield:
What is now known as Plainfield was once wilderness occupied by the Delaware Indians. They relinquished the property to white settlers via a treaty in 1818. The town was incorporated in 1839 and its name originates from the early Quakers who settled the area. The Friends were "plain" people, and thus the name Plainfield.
The town prides itself on developing strong business growth while sustaining a green, environment-friendly atmosphere. Home to five town parks, residents can choose from a range of public facilities, including playgrounds, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and extensive trail system for hiking, biking and walking. Plans are in the works to purge and develop the site of an old landfill, Shouse Brownfield. Recognized for its cooperation in reaching out to troubled youth and adults, Plainfield recently unveiled an athletic complex serving youths 4-18 and sports programs for those with disabilities.
Plainfield Recreation Center also holds Splash Island, a Caribbean-style water park. Interstate 70 runs through the town, providing easy access. Nearby are the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, O’Reilly Raceway Park, and the new Indianapolis International Airport.
Even their mega-shopping mall, the Metropolis, was planned to be entertaining as well as the largest mall in the Indianapolis west area. Featured are public meeting rooms, several dining choices, and a live performance space.
For two years straight, every public school in the Plainfield School System has received a 4 Star Rating. No other school system in Indiana has achieved this. And despite its recent development, citizens celebrate their heritage with the annual Quaker Parade and festivals.
