West Indianapolis:
If you are interested in living in Indianapolis West, you will be considering Pike, Wayne and Decatur Townships. Located in northwest Marion County is the Major Taylor Velodrome, named in honor of African American bicycling champion Marshall “Major” Taylor. Pike Township schools are enrolled in the Indianapolis Mathematics Initiative pilot program. Eagle Creek Park features over 5000 acres of water and land with facilities for skiing, swimming, picnics, hiking and boating. Nearby and soon to be known as a university, is Marian College, a Catholic liberal arts college.
Wayne Township is the location of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the venue for the Indianapolis 500, the Brickyard 400, and the United States Grand Prix. Also nearby is O’Reilly Raceway Park which hosts the annual NHRA U.S. Nationals, ARA and other racing events from March through October. Indianapolis west boasts several elementary and middle schools and is home to Ben Davis High School, a recipient of the National Award for Excellence in Education from the United States Department of Education.
Decatur Township can be found in the south west corner of Marion County. Serving as an invaluable business hub, it is the home of the new Indianapolis International Airport as well as Ameriplex, the state’s largest industrial complex. Originally settled by Quakers from South Carolina along the White River, Decatur Township was primarily a rural farming center but in recent years development has brought new residential and commercial developments.
