City of Whiteland:
Nestled in north central Johnson County just 14 miles south of Indianapolis, the towns of Whiteland and New Whiteland remain two of our state’s most enduring surprises. Homes and businesses in Whiteland and New Whiteland branch out from US 31 between Franklin and Greenwood, and residents enjoy the slower pace of a small town and semi-rural setting while having the conveniences of the city close at hand.
Whiteland was formally established in 1886 and carries its historic charm into neighborhoods and nearby businesses. Its sister city, New Whiteland, was established in 1954 as the promise of commerce followed the re-routing of US 31 in Johnson County.
Both communities maintain public works through independent governing bodies. Several small businesses call these communities home. In 1965, the surrounding areas consolidated to form the Clark Pleasant Community School Corporation. Whiteland hosts the administrative offices while the high school is located equidistant between Whiteland and New Whiteland. Nearby, the southern corridor of US 31 hosts some of the state’s newest and technologically advanced medical facilities in areas of heart disease, cancer treatment, diagnostics and hospitals.
Whiteland is the hometown of drag racing great Bob Glidden, who in 1997 retired as winningest driver in National Hot Rod Association’s history. He has since retained third place behind Warren Johnson and John Force.
Although south central Indiana is usually known for moderate winter temperatures, New Whiteland has the dubious honor of holding the coldest recorded temperature in Indiana, a whopping -38 degrees Celsius in January 1994.
